The Gander® O.R. Access Story

Orthopedic Surgeon James F. Marino, M.D. found himself standing at a surgical sink for the third time one particular day, prior to another surgical procedure. As usual, he stared at the shelves above the scrub sink, cluttered with supplies, which were unsightly, disorganized, and difficult to properly clean. He noted how the cardboard and paper boxes holding the supplies were different shapes and sizes and how the contents often fell into the scrub sink.

As he went through the 3-5-minute routine of scrubbing, Dr. Marino scanned the shelves for something to read. The descriptions on the boxes of the surgical supplies held nothing for him. He realized that he and other members of the scrub team were essentially "held captive" during the scrub time required for proper sterile technique with little to occupy their minds.

He suddenly envisioned a powerful opportunity to make this "downtime" useful, educational, and productive. He realized that--with a system carefully designed to appeal to advertisers, hospitals, and freestanding surgical facilities--scrub sinks offered a unique opportunity for companies to present their "advertorial" messages to surgeons and others on the surgical team. Perhaps the most unique aspect of this new medium was that it could be targeted to specific surgical specialties.

Dr. Marino came up with a design that serves the dual function he had envisioned - organizing surgical scrub supplies and providing a showcase environment for informational and educational materials.

After fine-tuning and conducting field evaluations, The GANDER® O.R. ACCESS display system was ready to be launched. GANDER® O.R. ACCESS made its debut in March 1999...distribution continues to grow rapidly and new advertisers are signing on to better position themselves in the marketplace.
